How to Add Audio to your Website

Young man on computer adding audio to website You've put a lot of thought into the way your website looks--but have you thought about how it sounds? Website Audio is a creative way to make your digital content more interesting and engaging. It's also easier than ever to add audio to any website page, even if you're not comfortable editing code. Here are some options to get you started:

The easiest way to add audio to your website

The simplest way to add audio to your website is to use SoundCloud. You can think of SoundCloud as a YouTube-like service for audio files. Like YouTube, it has a social component. Audio from SoundCloud can be shared on Facebook, Twitter, and other social sites. With a free account, you will be able to upload your files, host them on SoundCloud, and embed them on your website, just like you would with a YouTube video. All you have to do is click "share" on any track, copy the "widget code" and paste it into any HTML page.

SoundCloud's Benefits:

  • SoundCloud's embedded player is HTML5 compatible, which means it will work on all devices (even iPhones) without using Flash.
  • The interface is easy to use, and you can sign up from Facebook or via email.
  • You can upload audio files like podcasts and share them directly from SoundCloud to your Facebook or Twitter accounts.

Potential Problems:

  • Because you're hosting the files on SoundCloud's server, if SoundCloud's site crashes, your files won't be available
  • Customization options are limited. The SoundCloud player might not have the right look and feel for your website.

Audio Players for Wordpress and other CMS

My favorite solution for website audio is the jPlayer. It's totally free, endlessly customizable, and uses HTML5 with Flash fallback for non-supporting browsers. To make it even better, you can use the Wordpress Plugin or similar extensions for Joomla and Drupal. For all of these CMS, there are many different audio players available. Some can also serve as a video solution. You can always try out a few options and see which interface you like the best before making a decision. In general, these plugins will allow you to upload a file via your site's backed or FTP, then insert it into a page or post on your site. Some players will work as widgets in footers or side bars. Because jPlayer is very flexible,

Benefits:

  • Audio is hosted on your own server, so you have complete control over it.
  • Player can be customized, so it can look great on any website.
  • You can play a single track or an entire playlist.

Potential Problems:

  • You might have to use some code, especially if you're not using a CMS.
  • Audio cannot be automatically shared on social media sites.
  • Some coding might be involved.

Overall, adding audio to your website isn't difficult. By taking a few minutes to learn how to add audio payers to your web pages, you'll be able to make your website more interesting, engaging, and sticky--which means that people will spend more time on your site without leaving...and going to your competitors.
